Let’s face it. Sometimes it’s hard to fully love yourself. For me that’s still an active journey. And the world around us certainly hasn’t helped. But one thing I know I’m proud of is my Blackness. This scarf is an expression of love for myself, my people and the beauty of Black culture everywhere!

Black girls and Black hair are beautiful! How we wear our hair is part of our rich culture and heritage as well as a symbol of resistance and rejection of whiteness being the standard of beauty for us. Though it is legal to discriminate against Black hair in the majority of the US, we will continue to celebrate Black women, however they choose to wear their hair. The Crowning Glory Hat is a tribute to Black women, their hair, and everything else that makes them magical.
Ida B. Wells-Barnett was a force to be reckoned with and my personal shero. After an angry white mobbed burned down the Memphis newspaper she co-owned—called the Free Speech and Headlight—and ran her out of town for starting her anti-lynching campaign, she went all over the country spreading awareness. She settled in Chicago and helped elect the first Black Alderman, contributed greatly to women’s rights, and co-founded the NAACP, just to name a few of her accomplishments. This cowl pattern honors her work and her memory.
The Birthright shawl celebrates the idea of creating something beautiful from nothing and being able to thrive as a native right. This beautiful beginner-friendly triangle-shaped shawl starts with. a small cast on and increases at the end of every right-side row. The shawl is worked in 3 panels with each of the 3 colors, using really simple stitch patterns that are easy to remember once you get into a rhythm. It can even make for some really good, relaxing tv knitting if you feel brave enough! A stretchy bind off and good blocking really help the simple lace to pop and bring out the most life in your shawl!
The right to vote was not always guaranteed and it’s a right that has been threatened for marginalized people since the founding of this country. It’s our responsibility to protect and exercise this right. Let’s be ready to vote in our local, state, and national elections as they come up. Time for us to “Beanie the Change” we want to see in the world!
